Running... Again?

Image
If you know me you know there was a time about 10 years ago or so where I was running. A lot. At least 5 days a week and at least 5 miles a run. I wasn’t training, I wasn’t preparing for a race or a marathon. I just found myself enjoying the time spent running. I wasn’t obsessed with numbers, but I kept track of them all and liked seeing improvements in time and distances. It was good physical health and mental health. Then I tweaked my knee. Not bad enough that I couldn’t walk on it, just a tweak that told me I needed to back off of running for a little bit. So I decided on 2 weeks. At the end of 2 weeks I aborted a run very early as the pain was still there. 2 weeks became 3, became a month, became 5 years.

New Look

Image
I've been playing around with a new look for this blog for a while now. In fact I'd say for the better part of the year I've been wanting to change the look here. I thought I'd try Blogger's Dynamic views, but I really wasn't happy with the look, though I didn't think I really liked the look of it prior to that change. Blogger is a great platform to build on because you can theme it how you like. But I really didn't have the drive to come up with my own theme. Basically I'm lazy about this blog. I want it to function, look good, and be easy to work on. So then I went template searching.

Tech Stuff

Image
CES, the Consumer Electronics Show has come and gone. In the past I followed this closely to see what's coming, and check out the new tech. The problem with this show though is that nothing gets released anytime soon. If it comes out in 6 months that's considered quick. This year I paid only a little attention to CES. The "big" thing this year are smart TVs; TVs connected to the internet. Apparently 3D is being put on the back burner due to there not being a whole lot of content available and the need to have to wear stupid glasses while watching. The only thing I was hoping to see were color e-ink screens. There were a couple out there, but nothing that's coming out for mass production in a Kindle or Nook. Probably the coolest thing I've seen, and the one I look forward to adding to my house is Samsung's Smart Window. Check it out:

Happy New Year

Image
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had an enjoyable New Year's eve. This year, 2012, I have a couple of goals or projects (not resolutions) I'm hoping to achieve and will probably be chronicled on here, or on Google Plus. More than likely a little of both. Last year I posted 93 times to this blog, and this year I think I'll be improving on that.

HDR Spotting Debut

Image
One of my favorite photography sites is HDR Spotting , a site made in collaboration with Stuck in Customs' Trey Ratcliff and his long time friend Denis Khoo. Photographers submit photos which are screened by a rotating human selection of editors, and those that get approved are put up on the site. Those that are of exceptional quality get an Editor Pick. There are some wonderful photographers on this site, and I highly recommend taking a look. I've been working up the courage to submit a photo to HDR Spotting now for a while. My blog gets a small amount of traffic made up primarily of friends who either really like my photos, or are too polite to tell me they don't like them. Either way, thanks, but submitting a photo for a group of other HDR photographers to look at made me hesitant. But after some mental pep talks I finally submitted my first photo about 2 weeks ago. I didn't know how long the process was, but after a little over a week I thought I had been reject...

Slight Discrepancies

Image
My blog is small. My audience is even smaller. I know this, and yet I obsessively look at my stats daily curious to see what brings in the pageviews and what doesn't. Blogging about TouchPads and HP got me my highest pageviews, a number I won't share because it's not all that high. Basically my "happy"goal is to get 20+ pageviews per post. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't. Imagine my surprise though when I looked at my stats this morning and saw a huge spike of traffic for yesterday. A day I didn't post anything. It didn't look like any of this traffic was going to a specific page other than my home page, which was kind of disappointing. Then I opened up Google Analytics. Yeah, there's a little discrepancy between the two. If you were one of the 70+ visitors yesterday, thanks for coming by. If you were one of the six, bring a friend next time. Cooking With Gojee

Image
I cooked this weekend. I was originally going to write up about these awesome pillow cookies I made, or this great chicken thing I made (pictures and links down below) but really, who wants to read about that. Especially since I'm not a cook and don't particularly enjoy cooking. But this weekend I enjoyed it, and it got me wondering why. The first thing that helped me enjoy cooking is probably the biggest hurdle I hate, finding something to make. Yes, there are many recipe sites out there, but they don't work for me. In most things I enjoy reading up on how to do things, but not with food. I want a big picture showing the final product. Not what most recipe sites that I know have, which are little thumbnails surrounded by a column of navigational text, a center column of recipe text, and sometimes a third column suggesting other recipes if I like this recipe. If you want to get me hooked show me big well done pictures of your stuff and make the recipe part secondary. If I...

Blogger Goes Mobile

So apparently Blogger just got a mobile template. Up to now I had assumed my blog formatted nicely on all your iDevices (according to Google Analytics iOS accounts for 3% of traffic). Apparently I was wrong as today I'm told I can turn on mobile templates. Templates is plural because that's what the notification said, but as far as I can see it's just one template. Anyway, I now have a mobile template. Check it out and let me know what you think so I can tell Google what you think.

Back to Blogger

So I've found my way back to Blogger. Not quite coming around full circle, since I think I started back on Xanga way back when (does anyone still use that, by the way?), but it's pretty close to the first "real" blogging platform I've used. So why did I change, and do you really care? You probably don't, but I changed for the same reason I changed last time; price vs. use.

Check Out the New Digs

In celebration of the start of Sharks hockey I've re-done the site a little. I have other plans for a more permanent theme, with probably less teal, but for now I'm liking the Sharks jersey themed theme. After 2 games in Sweden last Friday and Saturday I feel the season officially starts this Saturday with our home opener, then the schedule resume with 3-4 games per week. Honestly, I don't know how you football fans can enjoy 1 game a week.

I've Moved

Well, my website moved anyway.  In looking at my website usage over the past year I decided that it really wasn't worth the ~$100/year investment for my own domain name and hosting. I could have gone cheaper and used a different website development piece of software, but that wouldn't be useful as I use Drupal for making websites. Instead I elected to use Drupal Gardens. Drupal Gardens, by Acquia, is similar to Blogger or Wordpress hosted sites where you have a given area to have your blog, but it expands on it and allows to have a full fledged site. Drupal Gardens is also neat for me as it gives me a taste of what Drupal 7 will look and feel like when it gets released, which could be pretty soon from what I hear. There are of course some drawbacks for having my site hosted here; I'm limited to using only the modules that Acquia has allowed, and other customizations are limited. A strong point, for me, is there theming tools are very useful. It's encouraging to hear tha...

Why Do I Even Have A Website

I was asking myself this question last night as I was talking to a friend about what I do. I basically spend all day working on other people's websites, figuring out how to integrate a feature into their site, or how to make something that they have thought out in non-programmer language to work on their sites. I enjoy my work, taking a client's idea and making it become real, in a digital world.
