The Pros and (Mostly) Cons of Upgrading to a 4K Monitor

Image
I'm in the process of getting back into photography which will mean a new camera, more on that in a later post. But the first step for me was a new computer, one with the horsepower to handle a modern day camera and its RAW files. Along with the computer comes a new 4K monitor. 4K is great for media consumption, right? Your characters on your favorite show or movie really look detailed and realistic. Scenery looks wonderful. Everything looks great, right? Wrong. You know what doesn't look great? That photo I took in 2012 that I thought was sharp but is very much not. I transferred over my past catalogs of photos over to Lightroom Classic and eagerly began opening up some of my favorite photos. At first I was happy with how the colors looked and how the scene was composed. Then I noticed it was a little soft. Well I had just gotten a new contacts prescription so that must be it. Changed to my glasses and the photos were even blurrier! I went through photo after photo and most ca

Better Late Than Never

Happy Holidays! Hope it was a fun filled one. With the New Year literally a day away I have a number of New Year resolutions, but the main one that concerns this site is to actually update it! We'll see how that goes.

Holiday Shopping

So today I started my holiday shopping. The list of people I get gifts for is small, so I wasn't too worried about waiting until the first weekend in December to get things started. Hey, it's better than waiting for the last weekend. OK, technically I started yesterday with an online order, but I don't count that. There's no human interaction, no fighting crowds, and circling parking lots for parking spots... huh... why don't I do more shopping online?

Other Projects

So for the past couple of months I'd been telling myself that I was going to write an application (my first attempt at this) for my chosen smart phone platform, Palm's webOS. There are a couple reasons why I wanted to do this. First, just to see if I could do it. I'd never written an application before, though I've been tempted more and more lately. Second, because although there are over 350 apps in Palm's store I'd have to say half of them are crap. And before you Apple iPhone fanboys start gloating, I remember what the App Store looked like at the beginning... a bunch of crappy apps. So I've decided to (hopefully) not make a crappy app. This app will handle BART's schedule. If you have ideas for names or logos I'd love to hear them. I chose webOS because it draws on web standards to build an app, standards I'm familiar with. The other project that I've been batting around is a gadget (Google's term for an app) for Google Wave. This o

Why Do I Even Have A Website

I was asking myself this question last night as I was talking to a friend about what I do. I basically spend all day working on other people's websites, figuring out how to integrate a feature into their site, or how to make something that they have thought out in non-programmer language to work on their sites. I enjoy my work, taking a client's idea and making it become real, in a digital world.

Shark Attack

Ah October. As much as I like sunny California summers, fall is my favorite time of year, for many reasons. Not only do I get to wear sweaters and clothes that I generally like better, but my favorite sort to watch gets started. It may seem odd, but this California boy loves hockey, and not just any hockey, San Jose Sharks hockey.

Photo Gadgetry

Photography is one of my favorite hobbies. And when you break it down it’s easy to see why. First, I believe that everyone needs, or should have, some sort of artistic creativity; whether it be drawing, paining, writing music, or taking photos. Second, I love gadgets, and there are no shortages of hardware and software gadgets to be used to help me in my quest for artistic creativity. That’s also how I rationalize my photographic gadget purchases.
